Custom hand-drawn word mark, original character illustrations and sign painting for Brochu’s Family Tradition, Savannah, GA, 2022. In collaboration with Dolan Design Group.
Andrew Brochu was a longtime Chicago chef who relocated to Savannah, GA during the Covid-19 pandemic to be closer to his and his wife’s family. Together with family and friends they opened his first restaurant, Brochu’s Family Tradition, in 2022. I was asked to create a piece of lettering as well as some original characters for the brand:
Off-kilter streamlined lettering evokes the era of roadside attractions on mid-century highways far from any major city
“Beak” the American oystercatcher
“Shucker” the oyster
“Boaty” the boat engine
Some of my initial thumbnails for the lettering and character designs:
When construction was almost finished, I made my way down to Savannah to paint some exterior graphics and give Beak a second life as a photo op inside:
Savannah is beautiful and the Brochus’ hospitality is unmatched. I hope to get back someday!
